California has the highest number of asbestos-related deaths in the country, as well as some of the largest asbestos deposits. As a result, a number of asbestos-containing sites in California have presented a substantial risk to workers.

From 1999 to 2015, several thousand California residents died from mesothelioma, which makes the state one of the most prevalent for mesothelioma-related deaths. California’s Siskiyou and Yuba counties rank among the highest for mesothelioma fatalities.

As a result, if you or a loved is a California resident who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should not hesitate to speak with an experienced attorney.

Industries Where California Workers Were Exposed to Asbestos

There are a number of industries where California workers have been determined to have been exposed to asbestos, which include the following:

  • Mining. More than 240 asbestos deposits have been found in California. Workers who functioned in these mines have a high diagnosis rate for mesothelioma, as well as other asbestos-related conditions.
  • Oil industries. There are approximately 30 offshore oil platforms as well as 21 oil refineries in the state of California. Many of these locations relied on asbestos for decades due to the material’s durable nature.
  • Power plants. As a result of its size, California has a number of power plants, which are primarily fueled by gas as well as other means. Many of these power plants have a long history of using asbestos. As a result, a countless number of California workers are at an increased risk of being diagnosed with mesothelioma, as well as other associated types of cancers.
  • Shipyards. Given the state’s large coastline, it should come as no surprise that California is home to a number of shipyards, which relied on asbestos in both ship construction as well repairs due to the material’s heat- and fire-resistant qualities.
California Laws Concerning Asbestos

It is often impossible to detect asbestos fibers with a routine inspection. According to California regulations, only licensed professionals with the appropriate equipment are able to detect and report on the presence of asbestos. These findings are then sent to laboratories for further testing concerning the type and concentration of asbestos.

Law in California also requires contractors and employers working on asbestos projects greater than 100 square feet with asbestos concentrations above .1 percent to register with the Asbestos Contractors’ Registration Organization. Different certifications are assigned for workers, supervisors/contractors, building inspectors, project designers, and management planners.

California also has strict laws concerning asbestos abatement. At abatement sites, all workers are required to wear respirators as well as multiple layers of protective clothing.

Additionally, California law requires anyone who handles asbestos to receive both training and education about the dangers presented by the material.

Speak with an Experienced California Attorney

In many cases, California residents who have been exposed to asbestos are not diagnosed with mesothelioma until years or decades later. If you or a loved one has questions about this process, you should not hesitate to speak with an experienced attorney.
