For many residents of Louisiana who have lived in the state for a substantial period of time, there is a good possibility that they have been exposed to the use of asbestos in the workplace. Unfortunately, frequent or prolonged exposure to asbestos can result in a number of serious health conditions, including mesothelioma, as well as other associated cancers and diseases. Not only can it help to understand the nature of asbestos exposure in Louisiana for victims, but it can also help to obtain the assistance of an experienced attorney.

The Rate of Asbestos Exposure in Louisiana

Between the years of 1999 to 2015, 769 Louisiana residents died as a result of mesothelioma. As a result, Louisiana has an above-average rate of mesothelioma deaths resulting in approximately 10 individuals out of a million annually dying from the condition. Despite these high rates, there are no known natural asbestos deposits in the area.

Louisiana Locations Where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

There are a number of industries in Louisiana where workers were exposed to asbestos, which includes the following:

  • Cement plants. Louisiana’s cement plants have shown a higher rate of cancer-associated deaths among workers than in other industries. For one reason, cement plants in Louisiana relied greatly on asbestos to perform a number of functions.
  • Oil refineries. As a result of its fire- and heat-resistant abilities, asbestos is commonly used in oil refineries throughout the states. Some of the oil refineries in Louisiana that are known to have used asbestos include Amoco, BP, Citgo, Texaco, and Shell.
  • Power plants. Various power plant companies in Louisiana have been determined to have exposed workers to asbestos, including Central Louisiana Electric Company and Southwestern Gas and Electric.
  • Shipbuilding. Many of the materials that were used to construct ships in Louisiana contained asbestos, which put shipbuilders at risk of being diagnosed with deadly conditions.
  • Agriculture. Rice was a staple of Louisiana for a number of years, but the production of this crop resulted in numerous workers being exposed to asbestos because the material was used in the manufacturer of harvesting machinery as well as at mills.
Louisiana Law Concerning Asbestos Exposure

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is tasked with administering asbestos regulations as well as making certain that federal regulations are followed. Rules throughout the state require notification before any work is performed with asbestos, including renovations. This work in Louisiana can only be performed by trained and professionals.

It is also important to understand that the victims of asbestos exposure in Louisiana only have one year in which to initiate a lawsuit. If you were exposed to asbestos and developed an associated condition, it is imperative that you act quickly in pursuing compensation.
