Maryland borders the ocean, where shipbuilding and other water-related industries are common. This is not the only way, however, that workers in the state were exposed to asbestos.

Instead, a large number of industries were heavily reliant on asbestos for many years. If you or a loved one who lives in Maryland was diagnosed with asbestos, you should not hesitate to speak with an experienced attorney.

The Rate at Which Asbestos Exposure Occurs in Maryland

Even though Maryland is a small state, approximately 779 people in the state died from mesothelioma between 1999 to 2015. Maryland has a relatively high number of asbestos deposits when compared to other states in the country. Cases of mesothelioma are highest in the area surrounding Baltimore.

It is also important to understand that following a mesothelioma diagnosis, a victim has a very narrow window of time in which to initiate a lawsuit. For people who pass away from mesothelioma, their surviving loved ones also have a small window of time in which to pursue litigation. In most cases, these limitations are three years following a mesothelioma diagnosis or three years after death from mesothelioma.

Maryland Industries Where Asbestos Exposure Occurred

Some of the industries in Maryland where asbestos exposure is known to have occurred include the following:

  • Higher education. For many years, a number of educational facilities used asbestos, which placed the lives of students and faculty at risk of mesothelioma as well as other deadly diseases.
  • Military. The city of Annapolis, Maryland is home to the United States Naval Academy, which used asbestos and, as a result, exposed workers to very serious dangers. There are also other military facilities in the state, including the U.S. Army Corporation of Engineers in Aberdeen, which used asbestos.
  • Power plants. Asbestos was heavily used in the power plant industry due to the material’s heat- and fire-resistant abilities. Some of the power plants that are known to have exposed workers to asbestos include Glen Burnie Powerhouse and Potomac Electric Power Company.
  • Shipbuilding. As a mid-Atlantic state, there are a number of shipyards and docks in Maryland which used asbestos in a variety of ways. Asbestos played a valuable role in shipbuilding due to the material’s durable nature. As a result, a large number of shipyard workers ended up diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Maryland Laws Concerning Asbestos

Asbestos regulations in Maryland are overseen by the state’s Department of the Environment, which is tasked with overseeing the licensing and certification of workers who handle asbestos.

Any company in Maryland who moves asbestos must have adequate licensure before commencing work. To obtain licensure, contractors must complete asbestos training. Workers also submit notification to the Maryland Department of Environment a minimum of 10 days before working with asbestos.
