A. P. Green Industries

A.P. Green Industries produced products like adhesives and cement that were designed to sustain substantial heat. For many years, the company placed asbestos in its products due to the material’s durable and heat-resistant nature. Due to the company’s use of asbestos, countless plant workers and product installers at A.P. Green were exposed to asbestos. Among the 1,200 products manufactured by A.P. Green, 22 of the products contained asbestos.

The History of Asbestos Use at A.P. Green

In 1967, A.P. Green Industries was acquired by the US Gypsum Company. After two decades of existing as a merged entity, Global Technologies Industries eventually acquired A.P. Green in 1998 with the hopes of becoming a significant player in the refractory industry. Several years later, in 2002, A.P. Green formed ANH Refractories with North American Refractories Company and Harbison-Walker Refractories Company.

Despite its numerous mergers over the years, A.P. Green remained focused on distributing and manufacturing refractory products. Because asbestos was an accessible and cheap mineral known for its durable nature, it became a popular additive within the A.P. Green product line. During the height of asbestos use in the country, the company expanded its asbestos offerings and became a key player during both World War I and World War II. A.P. Green is reported to have discontinued its line of asbestos offerings since 1976.

Asbestos-Containing Products Manufactured by the Company

A.P. Green was primarily focused on both the distribution and manufacture of refractory products. The company also created several other goods that contained adhesives, asbestos cement, and coatings. Due to its durable nature, asbestos was added to many of these products.

Litigation Involving Asbestos Exposure and A.P. Green Industries

The high level of asbestos exposure associated with products manufactured by A.P. Green Industries has led to thousands of lawsuits over the years involving asbestos exposure. From the 1990s to around 2007, the company was involved in thousands of asbestos exposure lawsuits.

A.P. Green Asbestos Trust Fund

To receive Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, A.P. Green was required to establish an asbestos trust fund. A.P. Green’s parent company, RHI Refractories, claimed that economic recession was the driving force in the bankruptcy filing, Even though bankruptcy proceedings began in 2002, the A.P. Green Asbestos Trust was founded in 2013. Before this date, asbestos claims were covered under the United States Gypsum Asbestos Personal Injury Trust.

Worker Exposure to Asbestos at A.P. Green

A.P. Green offered various asbestos-containing products, which exposed not just many workers but also the public to the risk of exposure to dangerous products. Two of the types of workers who were most commonly exposed to asbestos-containing products manufactured by A.P. Green include installers and technicians. As A.P. Green grew in size, the company also increased the number of plants it owned that made products.
