Warren Pumps

Warren Pumps is a Massachusetts-based company that manufactures pumps. The company focuses on innovating materials as well as pump usage throughout various industries. Warren Pumps utilized asbestos in many of the materials manufactured by the company until the 1980s. As a result of the company’s heavy use of asbestos, a large number of workers and consumers were exposed to the dangers of asbestos.

The Story Behind Warren Pumps

Warren Pumps was established in 1897 in Massachusetts under the name of Warren Steam Pump Company. In the company’s beginnings, it manufactured pumps for commercial as well as industrial uses. Some of the products manufactured by Warren include pistons, plungers, centrifuge machinery, and steam vacuums.

Warren was most routinely known for its asbestos usage in manufacturing pumps for military applications. The company began a partnership with the Navy at the beginning of the 1900s. The company became critical in military operations during World War II and all of its plans began facilitating Navy ship pump manufacture. Products manufactured by Warren were so heavily used that the company received the Army-Navy E award in the 1940s.

Warren Pumps’ products were utilized in Navy ships to power the cool barrels, vessels, and purify seawater. Asbestos was frequently used in pumps and was essential due to its durable nature. The company continued manufacturing asbestos products until the 1980s when legislation restricted its use.

In 1989, Imo Industries acquired Warren Pumps and several other pump manufacturing companies, which then merged into CIRCOR. Warren Pumps is a division of CIRCOR. The company currently operates as a division of CIRCOR.

Warren Pumps and other companies associated with CIRCOR have subsequently faced thousands of lawsuits concerning asbestos exposure as a result of asbestos-containing products manufactured by the company. Some asbestos-containing products manufactured by Warren include bilge pumps, crude oil pumps, brine pumps, main and fire pumps, centrifugal pumps, hydraulic pumps, twin-screw pumps, seawater pumps, and steam reciprocating pumps. Some of the workers at Warren who were exposed to asbestos include machine operators, oil refinery workers, pipefitters, shipyard workers, power plant workers, and steamfitters.

Warren Pumps and Asbestos Exposure Lawsuits

Warren ended up facing a large number of lawsuits due to its use of asbestos. Workers who were exposed to asbestos-containing products manufactured by Warren have since initiated countless legal actions against Warren Pumps.

One lawsuit against Warren was filed by a Navy veteran who was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma following three instances of asbestos exposure. The man claimed that exposure to Warrens’ pump resulted in a diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma in 2009. The jury, in this case, found that Warren as well as Leslie Controls (who was also named ) were responsible for not warning the man of the harm posed by asbestos. Subsequently, the court awarded $100,000 in economic damages and $25 million in non-economic damages to the man. The jury also awarded the man’s wife $10 million in non-economic damages connected to pain and suffering.

Unlike many other companies, Warren has not created a trust fund to address asbestos litigation. The company still receives and pays out claims.
