Court to Hear Connecticut Couple’s Mesothelioma Lawsuit Over Secondary and Environmental Exposure
For purposes of this article, the mesothelioma victim in this case will be referred to as Mrs. M.T., and her husband will be referred to as Mr. L.T.
In a recently filed lawsuit, a couple from Connecticut is taking on several big companies, including General Electric, Union Carbide, and Sporting Goods Property, Inc., after Mrs. M.T. was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma. The couple claims that years of asbestos exposure, both in their home and their community, led to the fatal illness. According to the lawsuit, the exposure came from two main sources. First, Mr. L.T. brought home asbestos fibers from his job. Second, asbestos was released into the environment near the couple’s neighborhood.
In their lawsuit, the couple pointed out that L.T. frequently came into contact with asbestos at work, unknowingly carrying home tiny fibers. Over time, M.T. is said to have inhaled or ingested these fibers. This is referred to as secondary asbestos exposure. This type of asbestos exposure is a common cause of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses among women.
The lawsuit claims that the defendants were aware for decades that asbestos was harmful, yet continued to manufacture, use, or release it without providing adequate warnings. The lawsuit alleges that the warnings provided to workers by the companies were inadequate. In their lawsuit, the couple notes that as early as 1929, companies had access to medical studies, scientific reports, and workers’ compensation claims that clearly indicated the dangers of asbestos. Throughout the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, it became increasingly difficult to ignore the evidence.
However, M.T.’s and L.T.’s claim goes beyond what happened in their home. It also addresses the companies’ environmental practices. The couple specifically points to asbestos released from General Electric and Sporting Goods Property facilities in Bridgeport, Connecticut, between 1964 and 1982. They claim that these asbestos fibres were emitted into the air, settled on the land, and contaminated nearby water sources, all of which were very close to their home. The lawsuit alleges that the companies were aware or should have been aware that releasing asbestos into the environment posed significant health risks to anyone living, working, or passing through the area. The couple argues that the defendant’s negligence and carelessness allowed dangerous asbestos particles to circulate freely, contributing to M.T.’s exposure and eventual illness.
Asbestos exposure continues to impact families across the nation, often in ways that go unnoticed until many years later. This lawsuit shows how asbestos can endanger people’s lives not only at their workplaces but also in their homes and communities, where they should feel safe. M.T. and her husband are now seeking justice for the harm they believe could have been prevented. It is their hope that the companies that made decisions long ago that endangered M.T.’s life and the lives of many others will be held accountable.
Families like M.T.’s and L.T.’s deserve justice, and hopefully, justice will be delivered.
