Mesothelioma | Mesothelioma Risks in Construction Trades

Asbestos was once an often used material in the construction industry due to its strength and heat resistance properties.  As a result, construction trades involved in the renovation or repair of older buildings may be at risk of exposure to asbestos and possibly mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.  Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that attacks the lining of the organs caused by asbestos exposure.

Asbestos was common in hundreds of construction materials.  Some examples of asbestos-containing products include:

  • Wallboard, plaster and joint compounds
  • Flatboard, micarta, permaboard, millboard, rollboard
  • Brick mortar
  • Roof shingles
  • Attic insulation
  • Plumbing pipes and valves
  • Ceiling tiles and flooring materials
  • Electrical wiring
  • Paints, stains and solvents

Many of these asbestos-containing products continued to be used until the mid 1980’s.  As a result, construction trades working in new construction at that time or earlier are at a higher risk for developing asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma.  Examples of construction trades with a higher risk of asbestos exposure include:

  • Carpenters
  • Welders
  • Plumbers
  • Electricians
  • Roofers
  • Painters
  • Laborer
  • Demolition worker
  • Brick mason
  • HVAC installer
  • Drywall hanger and taper
  • Millright
  • Sheetmetal worker
