Cosmetics Company Issues Makeup Recall of Asbestos-Contaminated Products

A California-based cosmetics company recently initiated a recall of four of its makeup products over asbestos-contamination concerns. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consumers are advised to immediately cease using four products produced by Beauty Plus Global Inc after testing  by the FDA revealed those items showed asbestos contamination. Those products in the company’s City Color makeup range are:

  • Matte blush (fuchsia);
  • Cosmetics timeless beauty palette;
  • Bronzer (sunset); and
  • Shimmer bronzer (caramel)

These latest products recalled by Beauty Plus Global Inc are available at major retailers, including eBay, Walmart, and Amazon.

This is the second time since May 2019 that Beauty Products Global Inc has issued a recall over asbestos contamination confirmed by FDA testing. Those tests came about after the company participated in the FDA’s ongoing testing of cosmetics for asbestos. Thus far, several other cosmetics products, many of them sold in Claire’s stores, have been subject to recalls after independent testing discovered the makeup items were contaminated with deadly asbestos fibers.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring soft mineral which is directly linked to causing mesothelioma cancer. The mineral was once used in a variety of cosmetics products until the federal government outlawed its use over the health concerns of asbestos exposure. Presently, pharmaceutical and cosmetics Johnson & Johnson faces an estimated 14,000 asbestos cancer lawsuits claiming the company knowingly sold talc-based products contaminated with asbestos fibers.

Thus far, juries in state and federal talcum powder lawsuits have handed down over $5 billion in total compensation to plaintiffs claiming they developed serious forms of cancer, including mesothelioma, from exposure to asbestos in talcum powder products. Two of those verdicts were handed down in Middlesex County, New Jersey, the corporate headquarters of Johnson & Johnson. Imerys Talc USA, another defendant in many of these cases, has declared bankruptcy under the weight of the mesothelioma talc lawsuits.

Mesothelioma is a rare and deadly form of cancer directly caused by exposure to asbestos. The disease commonly affects the thin lining of tissue surrounding the lungs but can also form around other vital organs such as the heart and abdomen. Mesothelioma has a latency period of anywhere from 20 years to 50 years which can leave patients with limited treatment options to try and fight the disease.

When companies knowingly product and sell products contaminated by asbestos, the law gives victims and their families legal rights to hold wrongdoers accountable and file mesothelioma cancer lawsuits to recover compensation. Under the law, plaintiffs in mesothelioma cancer lawsuits can recover compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and the pain and suffering of living with the disease.
