Malignant mesothelioma is a rare cancer that attacks the lining of the organs – lung, heart and abdomen. After malignant mesothelioma is diagnosed by a biopsy, the medical staff will determine the stage of the disease. To determine the stage of the malignant mesothelioma, physicians may conduct a computer tomography-CT or magnetic resonance imaging-MRI sans to evaluate the progression of the disease. Once physicians determine the stage, they will determine the appropriate treatment.

Pharmaceutical and cosmetics giant Johnson & Johnson may be the sole defendant in an estimated 12,700 talcum powder asbestos cancer lawsuits after its main talc supplier recently filed for bankruptcy under the weight of thousands of such cases across the country. Imerys Talc USA, which had supplied Johnson & Johnson with talc sourced from overseas mines, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a Delaware federal court and was subsequently released as a defendant from a nearly two-month trial in California state court.

For purposes of this article, the workers in this case will be referred to as T.C. and T.S. In a recent troubling California case, two heavy equipment operators filed a lawsuit against their former employer, Reyes Construction, after claiming they were fired for sounding the alarm about improper asbestos handling. The two, T.C. and T.S., who were working on a public restoration project in Long Beach, California, said they discovered asbestos-containing debris at the site. They alerted their supervisor, who ignored them at first, but they were later instructed to hide and bury it.

Amgen, a biotechnology company that develops human therapeutics, announced that their investigational drug motesanib did not improve the overall survival among patients with advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The drug would have offered new treatment options for hard to treat cancers such as NSCLC and possibly pleural malignant mesothelioma. Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an asbestos-related cancer that invades the lining of the lungs.
