A woman recently filed a mesothelioma lawsuit against more than 30 cosmetic companies in the Massachusetts Superior Court for Middlesex County. The woman, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2023, alleges that these brands’ talcum powder products led to her diagnosis. Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that develops after someone is exposed to asbestos. Some of the companies named in the lawsuit include Johnson & Johnson, Chanel, Marky Kay, L’Oreal, Maybelline, and Pfizer.

A New York-based minerals and chemical company recently agreed to a settlement during jury deliberations in a Florida state court to resolve an industrial talc mesothelioma cancer lawsuit. While the settlement terms between Vanderbilt Minerals, Inc. and the plaintiffs was not disclosed, the plaintiffs’ mesothelioma cancer lawsuit had asked for $11.5 million in total compensation, making the settlement likely in the millions of dollars.

For purposes of this article, the deceased mesothelioma victim in this case will be referred to as M.W., and his surviving wife will be referred to as D.W. In a recent ruling, the South Carolina Supreme Court affirmed sanctions imposed on Canadian asbestos manufacturer, Atlas Turner, for refusing to participate in a mesothelioma wrongful death lawsuit. The case was filed by a woman, D.W., who lost her husband, M.W., in 2023 after he developed malignant mesothelioma. D.W. filed a lawsuit against the asbestos manufacturer and other companies that she blamed for her husband’s illness.

The issue of asbestos in Philadelphia’s schools has resurfaced with urgency, following multiple cases of cancer among school staff, including a long-serving teacher diagnosed with mesothelioma. While this matter is happening in one city, it highlights a national problem. Thousands of old school facilities across the United States still contain hazardous asbestos materials, which pose a potential risk to teachers, learners, and staff.

New legislation is working its way through Congress that could end up having an enormous impact on compensation recovery options for mesothelioma cancer victims seeking justice for the asbestos exposure. Recently, the House of Representatives consolidated a pair of tort law reform bills targeting class action lawsuit and asbestos bankruptcy trusts to make it harder for plaintiffs to have their day in court.

Asbestos exposure is often associated with people who used to work in the blue-collar industry, such as the construction, manufacturing, and mining industries. Indeed, before the dangers of asbestos became widely known and its use became heavily regulated, many people in these industries were exposed to this hazardous substance. However, many more people suffered asbestos exposure through nontraditional exposure. Many workers who never directly handled asbestos-contaminated materials or products have developed mesothelioma and other illnesses as a result of nontraditional asbestos exposure.
