TRUST FUND GUIDE

The Pittsburgh Corning Asbestos Trust: What You May Be Owed

A plain-English guide to the Pittsburgh Corning Corporation Asbestos Personal Injury Settlement Trust.

If you worked around Unibestos pipe and block insulation and later developed mesothelioma or another asbestos disease, you may have a claim against the Pittsburgh Corning Asbestos Trust. Pittsburgh Corning made one of the most hazardous asbestos insulation products ever sold, and the company set aside money to pay people who got sick. This page explains what the trust is, what it pays, and how a claim moves through it. You can also read more about the company’s asbestos history before you file.

We are Throneberry Law Group, a nationwide mesothelioma and asbestos firm. We help families file trust claims, and we can review your work history at no cost. This guide reflects the trust’s own filings. Nothing here is a promise about your case, and every figure below can change when the trust updates its numbers.

CURRENT TRUST STATUS

The trust pays 19 percent of a claim’s value. That percentage applies to both filing tracks: 19 percent of the scheduled value on an Expedited Review claim, and 19 percent of the gross settlement value on an Individual Review claim, per the trust’s own website and its Notice Regarding Reconsidered Payment Percentage dated November 7, 2024. The trust began accepting claims on March 21, 2017.

BACKGROUND

What Is the Pittsburgh Corning Trust?

The Pittsburgh Corning Corporation Asbestos Personal Injury Settlement Trust pays people who were harmed by asbestos in Pittsburgh Corning products. Pittsburgh Corning was a joint venture owned by PPG Industries and Corning. In 1962 it bought the Unibestos product line and made Unibestos pipe and block insulation at plants near Tyler, Texas and Port Allegany, Pennsylvania into 1972.

Pittsburgh Corning filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April 2000 (Case No. 00-22876, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania). After a long reorganization, the court approved a plan that created this trust to handle all asbestos personal injury claims. The trust took over that liability so claims are filed with the trust, not against the old company. The trust started accepting claims on March 21, 2017.

PRODUCTS & COMPANIES COVERED

Products and Companies the Trust Covers

The trust covers asbestos personal injury claims tied to Pittsburgh Corning products. The signature product was Unibestos, a high-strength amosite insulation used on hot pipes and equipment.

The asbestos years most often cited for Unibestos pipe and block run from 1962 to 1972. If your exposure falls inside that window, your work history may support a Pittsburgh Corning claim.

INDUSTRIES, TRADES & OCCUPATIONS

Where This Exposure Happened

Unibestos went wherever hot pipes and boilers needed covering. Insulators, pipefitters, boilermakers, and steamfitters cut and fit the material, and the dust reached helpers and other trades working nearby. Common sites include power plants, oil refineries, chemical plants, steel mills, and industrial construction. You can read more about asbestos exposure in the construction trades if that describes your work.

Unibestos was also heavily used aboard ships and in shipyards. Navy veterans and shipyard workers who served in engine rooms and boiler rooms were exposed to amosite insulation on steam lines and equipment. If you served in the Navy, our page on Navy asbestos exposure explains how that service can support a claim.

HOW IT WORKS

How the Trust Pays Claims

The trust follows a written rulebook called the Trust Distribution Procedures, or TDP. The TDP sets a scheduled value for each disease level. Your payment is the scheduled value for your disease times the current payment percentage. Today that percentage is 19 percent.

A quick example. At the $175,000 mesothelioma scheduled value, an Expedited Review claim at the current 19 percent pays about $33,250 from this trust alone. Most clients also qualify with several other trusts, so a Pittsburgh Corning claim is usually one piece of a larger recovery.

FILING OPTIONS

Two Ways to File a Claim

The trust offers a faster fixed-value track and a full-review track. Your attorney helps you choose the one that fits your evidence.

Expedited Review

The trust checks your records against its standard medical and exposure criteria and pays the scheduled value for your disease level times the payment percentage. This track is faster and works well when the proof is clear.

Individual Review

The trust looks at your case in detail. The value can be higher than the scheduled amount, up to the maximum for your disease level, but the review takes longer and the payment percentage still applies. This track can make sense for a strong claim with a higher-than-average value.

THE NUMBERS

Scheduled Values by Disease Level

These are the scheduled, average, and maximum values in the trust’s Trust Distribution Procedures. The payment percentage of 19 percent applies to these amounts. Lung Cancer 2 (Level VI) has no fixed scheduled value and is handled through Individual Review.

Disease LevelScheduled ValueAverage ValueMaximum Value
Mesothelioma (Level VIII)$175,000$200,000$500,000
Lung Cancer 1 (Level VII)$47,500$50,000$100,000
Lung Cancer 2 (Level VI)None$20,000$50,000
Other Cancer (Level V)$27,500$30,000$100,000
Severe Asbestosis (Level IV)$47,500$50,000$100,000
Asbestosis/Pleural (Level III)$11,750$12,500$22,500
Asbestosis/Pleural (Level II)$5,500$6,000$10,000
Other Asbestos Disease (Level I)$400NoneNone

Values come from the Pittsburgh Corning TDP. The trust can change these amounts, so confirm the current figures before you rely on them. To see how trust payments fit with lawsuits and other recoveries, read about mesothelioma compensation and typical mesothelioma settlements.

GETTING STARTED

How to File a Claim

A strong trust claim takes preparation. Here is the path most clients follow with us.

1. Gather medical records. You need clear proof of diagnosis, usually a pathology report and a doctor’s statement tying your disease to asbestos.

2. Document your work history. Build a record of every job site, employer, and time period so we can match your exposure to Unibestos.

3. Match to covered products. Tie your exposure back to Pittsburgh Corning Unibestos pipe or block insulation during the covered years.

4. Choose your review track. We help decide between Expedited Review and Individual Review based on your evidence and your other trust claims.

5. File and track. Submit the claim and supporting documents, then follow it through review, payment percentage, and payment.
