There is still no cure for mesothelioma. However, there are several treatment options for this type of cancer. One of the ways to treat mesothelioma is through chemotherapy. Mesothelioma chemotherapy is a treatment that uses chemicals. This form of treatment involves taking drugs that kill cancer cells and prevent them from multiplying. Chemotherapy can be administered alone or in combination with other treatment options, such as surgery or radiation therapy. Unfortunately, many myths abound about chemotherapy.

After already handing down a $37 million verdict in favor of the plaintiffs at the conclusion of a two-month asbestos cancer trial, a New Jersey state jury recently handed down a staggering $80 million in punitive damages against the defendants. In reaching their decision, the jury determined that pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson and its talc supplier Imerys acted with recklessness when they produced asbestos-contaminated talc products knowing full well of the dangers posed to consumers.

For purposes of this article, the mesothelioma victim in this case will be referred to as Mr. S.T.C. and his widow as Mrs. M.C. In a recent court decision, the Court of Appeals of West Virginia overturned a worker’s compensation board’s mesothelioma ruling. Mr. S.T.C. died of malignant mesothelioma in October 2020.  After Mr. S.T.C.’s passing, his widow, Mrs. M.C., filed a workers’ compensation claim against his former employer.  However, the claim was denied. Mrs. M.C. challenged this decision before the workers’ compensation board, which upheld the administrator’s denial. Mr. S.T.C.

With the signature of Governor Gavin Newsom, California recently passed a law aimed at protecting mesothelioma cancer victims during the fact-gathering stage of an asbestos cancer lawsuit. The bill, SB 645, would limit the number of hours defendants would be able to question plaintiffs under oath in cases where plaintiffs can demonstrate to the courts that they have less than six months to live.

A mesothelioma diagnosis can affect the patient in many ways. These effects can either be short-term or long-term. One of the major ways a mesothelioma diagnosis can affect a patient is by lowering their self-esteem. Self-esteem is how a person values and perceives themselves. It is based on what someone believes about themselves. The physical changes that come after a mesothelioma diagnosis or after a patient starts receiving mesothelioma treatment, such as hair loss, weight changes, and surgery scars, can affect how they feel about their appearance and body image.

A Tennessee county recently settled a mesothelioma-asbestos exposure lawsuit with the widow of a former school teacher who allegedly contracted the deadly lung disease while working for the county decades ago. The lawsuit had been slated to go to a trial by jury just a few days before the settlement but the recent discovery of asbestos on school grounds may have prompted county officials to reconsider resolving the issue.
