Mesothelioma, a form of cancer that affects the tissue layer that covers most internal organs, is primarily caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring minerals. These minerals, which occur as masses of strong, flexible fibers, were widely used in the 20th century to insulate, strengthen, and fireproof many commercial items and products. Asbestos can be found in finished products such as walls, pipes, tiles, cement, insulation, roofing shingles, ceiling tiles, and many more.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, asbestos is a mineral fiber that occurs in soil and rocks. Asbestos was widely used before the 1980s in, among other things, building materials. It was in the 1980s that the dangerous effects of this mineral became widely known. However, although asbestos is not commonly used today, it is still used in some products. Also, asbestos can be found in old buildings. This means that asbestos exposure remains a problem. Asbestos can cause various deadly diseases, such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer.

For purposes of this article, the mesothelioma victim in this case will be referred to as J.H. In a recent case, a Louisiana jury awarded more than $3 million to a woman who developed mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer primarily caused by asbestos exposure, after years of using talcum powder products. This case is part of a growing number of cases filed by people who have never worked with asbestos but trace their mesothelioma diagnosis to a product that has long been thought to be safe: talc.

For purposes of this article, the mesothelioma victim in this case will be referred to as J.S. or Mr. S. This case is about a construction worker, J.S., who worked at the Todd Shipyards for years and was later diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer that is primarily linked to asbestos exposure. In his lawsuit, J.S. names multiple companies as defendants. He blames these companies for having negligently exposed him to the asbestos that led to him developing his illness. His case has involved demands for records from him and requests for dismissal from the case from many companies.

A New York City jury recently returned a substantial award in an asbestos talcum powder lawsuit brought by a woman who claims her rare and deadly form of cancer was caused by exposure to asbestos fibers in the talc-based products she used for decades. The lawsuit named pharmaceutical and cosmetics giant Johnson & Johnson as the defendant and alleged that the company knew for decades about the presence of carcinogens in its talcum powder products but provided no warning.
