The conference titled Asbestos: Impact on Public Health, Environment, and the Economy will have presentations on asbestos exposure issues, asbestos detection and treatment, environmental and economic impact, national and global policy. Asbestos exposure causes mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer, asbestosis and other asbestos-related diseases. Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer linked to asbestos exposure.

For purposes of this article, the mesothelioma victim in this case will be referred to as Mrs. M.T., and her husband will be referred to as Mr. L.T. In a recently filed lawsuit, a couple from Connecticut is taking on several big companies, including General Electric, Union Carbide, and Sporting Goods Property, Inc., after Mrs. M.T. was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma. The couple claims that years of asbestos exposure, both in their home and their community, led to the fatal illness. According to the lawsuit, the exposure came from two main sources. First, Mr. L.T. brought home asbestos fibers from his job.
