Researchers at a Scottish university are developing a new laser system that will help physicians distinguish between cancer tumor cells and healthy tissues, and allow them to remove the cancerous cells while leaving healthy surrounding tissue intact. To help further this research, the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has bestowed the project’s leader, Prof. Jonathan Shephard a 1.2 GBP grant and will further collaborate with the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust to develop the new system for brain cancers.

Colgate-Palmolive Co. will avoid going to trial in a New Jersey state courtroom as they agree to settle a lawsuit linking asbestos to its talcum-powder. Carol Schoeniger, a Pennsylvania woman filed a lawsuit against the New York-based company claiming its talcum-powder caused her to develop mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. The financial terms of the settlement have not been made public. This is not the first claim that talc users have made against the brand.

According to a federal workplace report on safety inspection, three companies exposed residents and workers at a Missouri residential nursing facility to asbestos hazards during a flooring replacement project. The three companies also failed to ensure safe asbestos removal during the project. Early this year, OSHA began an inspection in the residential nursing facility based on a referral from the Missouri Department of Natural resources. More than 30 days after the flooring work began, OSHA evacuated the nursing facility’s residents.

For purposes of this article, the mesothelioma victim in this case will be referred to as Mr. E.P. A recent mesothelioma lawsuit in Connecticut has attracted significant attention and highlighted concerns over previously unknown dangers of talcum powder in consumer products, notably Johnson & Johnson’s (J&J’s) talcum powder products. In this case, a 64-year-old man is blaming J&J’s talcum powder products for his mesothelioma. E.P. claims that illness resulted from prolonged use of the giant pharmaceutical company’s talcum powder.

For purposes of this article, the mesothelioma victim in this case will be referred to as N.L., Jr. In a recent court decision, a Louisiana court sided with a mesothelioma victim in a legal battle against Huntington Ingalls Incorporated, the owner of Avondale shipyards. Mr. N.L., Jr. filed a personal injury lawsuit after being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive type of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. The plaintiff claimed that the shipyard failed to warn him about the dangers of the material when he worked there in the 1970s and 1980s.

A popular young YouTube star and celebrity babysitter recently had her children’s-makeup line pulled from store shelves after testing by the Food and Drug Administration confirmed the products are contaminated with cancer-causing asbestos fibers. The FDA took to Twitter to announce, “Today, the FDA is releasing new results from its continued testing of cosmetic products for asbestos & is warning consumers to not use 2 additional products that have tested positive for asbestos & have been recalled.
