Machinist Asbestos Exposure: How Shop Floor Workers Were Put at Risk

By Michael Throneberry, founder of Throneberry Law Group

Machinists have for a long time played a key role in keeping America’s factories, shipyards, and power plants running smoothly. For decades, they operated, repaired, and maintained the heavy equipment that kept businesses running. Unfortunately, these workers handled materials packed with asbestos without any warning about the dangers they faced. Because of this, a huge number of machinists breathed in asbestos fibers while just doing their jobs, and now, years later, many are living with the health consequences.

At Throneberry Law Group, we work closely with former machinists and their loved ones to help them determine their next steps. If you are trying to understand how exposure happened or what rights you have, you are not alone. Many former machinists were exposed to asbestos while performing routine tasks, and years later, some developed serious illnesses such as mesothelioma. Learning how exposure occurred can help workers and their families make informed decisions about their legal options. Many machinists we have worked with were surprised how much of their daily work involved asbestos once we walked through it together.

How Machinists Got Exposed to Asbestos

Back in the 20th century, asbestos was everywhere mainly because it resisted heat, fire, and corrosion. Industrial equipment frequently contained asbestos, and machinists often worked directly with these products during installation, maintenance, repairs, and equipment overhauls.

Many job duties disturbed asbestos-containing materials. Cutting gaskets, replacing insulation, grinding parts, and removing worn components could release microscopic fibers into the air. Once airborne, these fibers could be inhaled and remain in the body for decades.

Common Workplace Sources of Asbestos

Machinists encountered asbestos in various ways. Asbestos was in pumps, valves, turbines, boilers, compressors, brakes, packing materials, and layers of insulation. Since asbestos was quite common, workers were frequently exposed to multiple sources during a single shift. In busy machine shops, fibers released by one task could spread throughout the work area, affecting nearby employees as well.

The Health Consequences

One troubling aspect of asbestos exposure is that the effects do not show up right away. Often, it takes decades. Many machinists are only now, years after retiring, discovering that old workplace conditions led to serious diseases.

Mesothelioma is one of the most serious asbestos-related illnesses. It develops in the lining surrounding the lungs, abdomen, heart, or, in rare cases, the testes. Machinists also face other risks, such as lung cancer and asbestosis. Since these conditions develop slowly, many people do not immediately connect their health issues to their old jobs.

Legal Options for Former Machinists

A mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diagnosis is hard, but you have options. Affected individuals may seek compensation through asbestos trust funds, claims against asbestos product manufacturers or suppliers, workers’ compensation benefits where available, or other legal avenues that apply to their circumstances. A successful claim may be able to cover things like medical bills, lost wages, and travel costs for treatment, which can help you and your family cope financially.

Ensure you gather anything that can help prove where and when you were exposed, such as job records, union documents, military service records, and lists of the products or machines you worked with. The more details you have, the better.

Proof is the heart of a machinist’s case. Job records, union books, Social Security earnings statements, and the memories of people you worked beside can all place you near specific asbestos products. Because machinists often handled parts from many manufacturers, one work history can support claims against several bankruptcy trusts at once. We do this reconstruction with clients all the time, so you do not need to have it figured out before you call.
