Why September 26 Matters
Members of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation community started Mesothelioma Awareness Day in 2004. Congress recognized the day in 2010. The Foundation uses it to push for more attention and research money for a cancer that is often misdiagnosed.
Mesothelioma forms in the thin lining around the lungs, the belly, or the heart. The main known cause is asbestos. Symptoms often show up decades after a person breathed in asbestos fibers. That delay is why awareness matters. Many people never connect a cough or shortness of breath to a job they held 40 years ago. Doctors don’t always make that connection either.
Three Simple Ways to Take Part Today
Anyone can take part, and none of it costs a thing. Here are three easy ways to join in.
- Wear blue. Blue is the color of mesothelioma awareness. Wear it to work, to the store, or to dinner with family. It starts conversations.
- Share a story. Tell people why this matters to you. Honor someone you love, celebrate a survivor, or remember someone who is gone.

Remembering the Workers Behind Every Diagnosis
For much of the last century, asbestos was used across the country. It was in the insulation, gaskets, and other products used in shipyards, refineries, power plants, steel mills, factories, and schools. It was also on Navy ships.
The people who worked with it were pipefitters, boilermakers, electricians, mechanics, and laborers. Our page on occupational asbestos exposure lists many more of these jobs. Many of these workers also served in the military. Their families were sometimes exposed too, through dust carried home on work clothes.
Awareness Day is a chance to remember the people behind the diagnosis. They were parents, grandparents, and neighbors in every state. Many of them had no idea the products they worked with could make them sick decades later.

Start with medical care. Ask for a referral to a mesothelioma treatment center or a doctor who treats this cancer often. It is rare, and doctors who see it regularly can make a real difference in care. Learn the common symptoms of mesothelioma too, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, and a cough that won’t go away.
Then write down the work history while memories are fresh. List employers, job sites, years, and the products you remember. This helps doctors see the exposure. It also matters for any legal claim.
Every state sets a time limit, called a statute of limitations, for filing an asbestos lawsuit. Many companies that made asbestos products also set up asbestos trust funds to pay the people they harmed. A lawyer can explain which of these may apply to your family.
